A trip to the "CERN" exhibition in Riyadh

Monday 20-03-2023

The Physics Department at the College of Science and Humanities in Al-Kharj has organized a scientific trip for the students of the department, both male and female branches, to the "CERN" exhibition in Riyadh on Monday 28 Shaaban 1444 AH corresponding to 03/20/2023 AD at 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The trip was organized under the auspices of the Dean of the College of Science and Humanities, His Excellency Dr./ Abdul Rahman Al-Harithy, and the Head of the Physics Department, His Excellency Dr./ Sattam Al-Sawaji. The scientific trip was supervised by Dr. Talal Al-Qahtan and Dr. Hesham Shahbunder from the male students’ branch, and Dr. Samah Abdullah and Dr. Fathia Al-Hakami from the female students’ branch.

The trip included students getting acquainted with the basic components of the CERN experiment project located near Geneva in Switzerland, which is the largest laboratory in the world in the field of particle physics, including tens of kilometers of laboratory tunnels, main detectors and its recent discoveries that led to obtaining the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2013 after the experimental discovery of the Higgs Boson particle. The students interacted actively in the exhibition with pictures, posters, film recordings, and the distinguished interactive shows in the exhibition, such as the recording of "The Origin of the Universe" and the electronic interactive display "Proton Football", which showed the impact of protons colliding with different energies, which had an enthusiastic impact on the students to learn more about this experience. unique science. The students also reviewed other parts of the exhibition related to radiation detection and nuclear detectors such as the Geiger counter and TLD detectors for measuring personal doses, and how to obtain the necessary licenses to work in a safe manner in the nuclear fields in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It is noteworthy that the exhibition of the European Organization for Nuclear Research "CERN" in the city of Riyadh started its activities on February 12 2023 and will continue until May 12, 2023 in the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology at its headquarters in the Innovation Tower, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Education, and the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation “Mawhiba” for talent and creativity, the Research, Development and Innovation Development Authority, and “Mishkat” Interactive Exhibition for Atomic and Renewable Energy. The exhibition aims to enhance the passion and inspire visitors in the fields of modern physics, encourage students to study it at the middle and high school levels, and, in particular, motivate university students to continue their scientific specializations in studies of the origin of the universe and the basic components of matter.
